Who do you say I am? Homily for the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B.
On the way to Caesarea Philippi Jesus asks his disciples: Who do you say I am? This is an intimately personal question. If we do not feel its intimacy as disturbing - even intrusive - we have not listened to it. It is a question that summons a response from a silent depth within the heart itself. Peter replies: “You are the Christ.”

The deaf man in today’s gospel represents all believers. Apart from the grace of God we are all “deaf” to God’s word. May the Lord truly open our ears that we can be attentive to his word. May he break open our deafness so that we can truly be attentive to those whom he has placed in our lives.
Lip service only. Homily for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B.

The interpretative key to understanding what Jesus is saying in today’s gospel can be found in the words that he quotes from the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah condemns his contemporaries because their worship is no more than lip service. “This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human reg...

Today is our fifth and final week reflecting upon chapter 6 of John’s gospel. We arrive at a watershed moment in the Johannine story, a moment of crisis. Our English word “crisis” comes from the Greek Kρίσις (krisis), which means judgment or decision. Jesus turns to the Twelve and asks: “Do you want to go away too?” This question is also directed to us: Will we choose Jesus, despite the incredi...

The miracle of the feeding of the multitude brings us to Jesus, the bread of life, the true Paschal lamb. When we receive the Eucharist we participate in a new and greater Exodus by receiving the body and blood of Christ.

This is the third of our five reflections upon chapter 6 of John’s gospel. I’ve suggested that a helpful way to understand John’s account of this miracle is to use the analogy of a staircase with four levels. At level 1, the ground floor, we have the story of the miracle. At level 2 we’re reminded of God feeding his people during the Exodus with manna. But manna only satisfies a physical hunger...

Feeding a multitude of thousands of people from five barley loaves and two fish is certainly a miracle, but John’s gospel never uses the word “miracle”. It prefers the word “sign” because the significance of the miracle does not rest solely in the act of the miracle itself, but in that to which the miracle points. On one level the feeding of the multitude is a sign pointing to a new Exodus. Jus...

The story of the feeding of the multitude is the only miracle story to be found in all four of the gospels, and there are two stories of Jesus feeding a multitude in Mark and Matthew. This highlights the extraordinary significance of this miracle story for all four of the evangelists. Today we reflect upon John’s account of the miracle, although John prefers to use the word sign rather than mir...

In last Sunday’s gospel, Jesus sent the Twelve forth; today they rejoin Jesus and tell him all they had done and taught. Jesus then says to them, “Come away to some lonely place and rest for a while.”The disciples set out by boat, but the people can guess where they’re going and set out on foot, reaching the destination before them. When Jesus steps ashore he is moved to the very depths of his ...

In chapter 3 of Mark’s gospel Jesus summoned those he himself wanted. In today’s gospel from chapter 6 those whom he has summoned are now sent forth. The Jewish philosopher Martin Buber wrote that “All revelation is a summons and a sending.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen once described the rhythm of Christian life as: “First come, then go.” We are summoned to be with Jesus, as were the disciples. The...

Today’s gospel shows that the greatest enemy to faith can simply be “familiarity”: a refusal to believe that God’s presence - and prophetic agents of that presence - could come to us in so familiar a form as the person next door. The people of Nazareth had their own fixed ideas as to when and where and how the Messiah should come to Israel - and the one they knew as the carpenter, Mary’s son, s...

In today’s gospel Mark places one story inside another in what is sometimes called a Markan sandwich. The flavour of the outer story adds zest to the inner one; the taste of the inner one is meant in turn to permeate the outer one. The outer story is about Jairus, one of the local synagogue presidents, and particularly his 12-year-old daughter; the inner story is about a much older woman, who f...

“Who can this be? Even the winds and the sea obey him.” Mark provocatively leaves the question unanswered. It just hangs suspended over the story, leaving the reader to supply the answer. For anyone versed in the Jewish scriptures, for those who know that God alone is sovereign lord over the sea, there is only one possible answer to this question.
What parable can we find for the Kingdom of God? Homily for the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Parables are a form of analogy that seek to illuminate one reality by appealing to something better known. Today’s two parables are about the Kingdom of God, and to help the people understand something about God’s kingdom Jesus uses the image of a seed. In one story the farmer plants a seed, but its growth is out of his hands. The second story is about the tiny mustard seed that grows into a la...

In today’s gospel we have an example of what scripture scholars often call the “Markan sandwich.” This narrative technique involves “sandwiching” one story within another or, if we discard the culinary metaphor, framing one story with another. The first story is about the family of Jesus turning up, thinking that he has gone out of his mind. They want to take him home. The story that is “sandwi...
